- This chapter introduces playas a 'transaction' between the child and the environment influenced by family and culture. This conceptualisation is used first to examine typical play and then used to explore some of the circumstances for the play transaction not taking place. Finally, the impact of child maltreatment on the play transaction is examined with specific reference to the findings of a research study.
